Casa Matías/Restaurante Astoría

Description:

  • In a quiet residential neighborhood of private apartments and long expanses of concrete sits this quiet oasis. Set behind a facade that's painted ocher yellow with forest-green trim, it's the kind of hip, modern, fashionable place a Spanish businessman might take one of his clients from out of town. Because of its location just beyond the perimeter roads north of the city, it's rarely frequented by foreign visitors.

One habitué told us he comes here every week. When asked why, he explained that the food is lively and colorful and recommended the savory meatballs that come with three different sauces, including a creamy version called "grandmother's gravy." A casserole of well-flavored cod appears bubbling hot with potatoes. Locals favor the thick soup (actually a potage) of garbanzos and fresh spinach.

    Fantastic food

  • Expect the freshest fish and meat here, all beautifully cooked. The guisos (stews) are also wonderful - all freshly cooked. Not cheap but worth it for a really special meal and service.
