• Sofia is one of Costa Rica's shining star restaurants in Monteverde. The setting is beautiful, and the cuisine is high quality eclectic fusion.  The cocktails, such as the mango-ginger mojito, are creative and strong enough to satisfy the finnickiest of drinkers, often making use of local ingredients, as do the salads, which are generous and bursting with color. Main dishes are generous and substantial, and there are plates for vegetarians, too, though the meat and seafood dishes are the real standouts. Entrees are rich but not greasy, the seafood chimichanga is one of the popular plates that helped establish Sofia's excellent reputation. The steaks comes over a delicious bed of mashed sweet potatoes and a buttery sauce that is finger-licking good. The presentation helps set the mood, but it is the fresh taste that makes Sofia such a fine place to dine; subtle yet spicy chipotle sauces infuse some dishes and are a prime example of the Nuevo Latino cuisine Sofia's has helped create. The dining rooms are spacious and carefully lit, perfect for a romantic dinner, tables near the picture widows offer views of the cloud forest and tropical gardens. To top if off, Sofia's is affordable, and has excellent dessert, too.
