Aniversario de la Revolucion Mexicana

Description:

  • Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma, the following description may no longer be accurate. Please consider this when making your travel plans. This holiday commemorates the seven-year revolution that finally ousted the dictator Porfirio Diaz. After 35 years of his rule, the gulf between the rich and poor had widened so much that Mexico was ripe for change. When Diaz reneged on his promise of democracy, people took to the street led by the folk heroes Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, who joined forces with Francisco Madero. Díaz fled the country in 1917 and Mexico finally had a democracy, so to speak. This national holiday is celebrated with parades, lots of fireworks and a carnival with dancing into the wee hours.
