Description:

  • On Cinco de Mayo, (May 5th) Mexicans celebrate their victory at Puebla over the French. After the Civil War of 1858, Mexico had accumulated heavy debts to several countries and decided to stop payment. France took this as an opportunity to invade Mexico, and Archduke Maximilian led French troops to Puebla where they were defeated by the small, ill-equipped but fierce army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin. As it is one of the few victories the Mexican Army has ever had, it is cause for celebration. There are usually fireworks and parties to commemorate the day. Banks and other government offices are closed.
