Dia de Cristobal Colon/Dia de la Raza

Description:

  • This is a dual holiday in Mexico. For a small majority this is Columbus Day, celebrating the 1492 discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. However for many Mexicans, this day is celebrated as Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race)and honors Gonzalo Guerrero, the father of the Mexican race. Guerrero was a Spanish Conquistador shipwrecked off the coast of Cozumel in 1511. Eventually he assimilated into the Mayan culture by marrying a Mayan princess. Their children are known as "mestizo" and are considered the first Mexicans. This is an official holiday so many services are closed. There is usually a band playing followed by a small carnival in the Plaza Central.
