Dia de San Francisco de Asís

Description:

  • Franciscan monks, followers of St Francis of Assisi, had quite an impact on Mexico. They arrived in Mexico as missionaries in 1500 AD and quickly became the protectors of the indigenous population. The monks built schools and seminaries throughout Mexico for the Indians to attend and were responsible for educating many heroes of the Independence Movement and Revolution, including Miguel Hidalgo, Jose Morelos, Ignacio Allende and Benito Juaréz. This feast day honors St Francis. On this day a special mass is held, followed by small celebrations throughout San Miguel.
