Natalicio de Benito Juarez

Description:

  • This day celebrates Benito Juarez, one of Mexico's greatest presidents. Born in 1806 into the Zapotec tribe of San Pablo, Jaurez went on to become the Governor of Oaxaca. In the 1854 he helped oust the dictator Santa Anna and strip the Church of its power. During the Mexican Civil War (1858-61) he fought with the liberals and was elected president in 1861. He continued his reforms and fought once more during the French invasion of 1863. He was re-elected president in 1867 and served until his death on July 17, 1872. His civic holiday is marked with speeches, parades and fireworks.
