Description:
- Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma, the following description may no longer be accurate. Please consider this when making your travel plans. Mexico remains 90% Catholic and Semana Santa is the first part of the two-week Easter celebrations in Mexico. It begins with Palm Sunday with a special mass. The altars at Iglesia de San Miguel and Igelsia de Corpus Christi are decorated with palm crosses. Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday) marks the beginning of Holy Week with a re-enactment of the Last Supper. A Passion play of the crucifixion is performed on Viernes Santo (Holy Friday). Following mass there is a burning of a papier-mache effigy of Los Judas (Judas) and afterwards a candle light vigil begins that will last through until Easter Sunday.
