4
DAYS
Destination(s):
Cozumel
Trip type(s): Cool and Hip
Author: David
Though nowhere near as active as Cancun or Playa del Carmen, Cozumel also knows how to show you a good time: party on a boat, party on the beach, party in the clubs...
Day 1 - Cozumel
 Day Note

Check out the eastern coast while sipping margaritas. Dance the night away with the locals at Neptuno.

Neptuno Dance Club
 Type: Nightclub
Playing a combination of Latin, dance and top-40 remixed music with a nightly light and laser show, this disco is one of the best places to party in San Miguel. It is one of the oldest spots on the island and its waterfront location close to downtown makes it popular with both locals and visitors. Open until 2am or later on busy weekend nights.

This Mexican-owned all inclusive beach resort really caters to families and this is reflected in their reasonable prices and excellent children's program. For the adults there are a variety of activities including the Sand Dollar Sports for diving or snorkeling. The grounds resemble a Mexican village with unit of eight placed together under palapa roofs. Most of the rooms are ocean view and all are decorated in bright Mexican colors and furnishings. The staff here are noted for their genuine warmth and hospitality.

There aren't many restaurants along the Eastern highway, the only paved road that skirts along the island. Coconuts is located right off this road on Cozumel's only hill next to Playa del San Martin . They serve traditional American favorites like burgers and fries as well as some Mexican entrees. To make up for the regular fare, patrons get breathtaking views of the ocean. Coconuts is also famous for its ‘full moon parties' with great live music and dancing. Other than party nights, Coconuts closes at dusk.

Day 2 - Cozumel
 Day Note

You´ve got to at least see a bit of the reef while in Cozumel, so why not snorkel a bit? Don´t worry, its still a party boat. Back in town you can have dinner at Carlos n Charlies before heading upstairs to Señor Frogs to keep dancing till dawn.

At the rowdy Carlos 'n Charlies, fun-seekers embark on a true party experience. This open-air bar and restaurant is always hopping and not the place to come for a quiet evening. Like most party places, the food is nothing outstanding. Stroll to the back to find a selection of more frozen daiquiri concoctions than you can shake a stick at -- but be careful, or they will have to carry you out at closing.

Loud, crowded, and happening. This is where the kids come to dance the night away.

Day 3 - Cozumel
 Day Note

Sleep late. Spend the day on the beach or in the pool. As evening rolls around head to the square downtown & mingle with the cruise ship crowd at these two classic spots.

Fat Tuesday
 Type: Bar
This is a very popular party stop among the cruise crowd. The DJs love to play the top 40 dance tunes and get the crowd riled up so they can behave badly. Frozen drinks, especially daiquiris, are the specialty of the house. These potent potions are served by the glass, the yard and the gallon. There are appetizers and snacks available, but it is advisable not to mix them with Fat Tuesday's frozen concoctions.

Every Sunday night at 8pm the residents of San Miguel gather at Plaza Central for live music and good-hearted socializing. Locals come dressed in their Sunday best, but the tone is quite casual. Mariachi, salsa or Yucatecan bands play until 10pm and everyone tends to dance along with the music. The entire Plaza is full of merriment during this distinctly Cozumelean tradition. Admission is free.

Hard Rock Cafe
 Type: Bar
This rock-and-roll chain bar is one of the first places you see when you arrive at the ferry docks. It's been designed to resemble a quasi-Mayan ruin with a marine fresco inside. Memorabilia includes guitars once owned by Kiss and Radiohead and clothing from Peter Gabriel, Elton John and Elvis Presley. The food is okay -- the usual burgers, ribs, chicken and pasta. The big draw here is the excellent drinks along with the great music and late hours. The boutique sells a variety of Hard Rock products including t-shirts and watches.
