Hi there,
Good choice: there are some very good alternative routes to Machu Picchu and the Salcantay is a popular trek.
Check out this overview at: http://peruforless.com/packages/adventure-trekking-salcantay.php for some more information.
Buen viaje!

FYI the Salkantay lodge has been built without environnemental impact study and there is a conflict with the local community who claim that there was no agreement with them previous to the construction.
On the other hand and since last year the local authorities seeing that there was a huge frequentation growth on this alternative route to the Inca Trail have decided to charge a US$ 50 as a right simply to walk on this trail. This fee is not of course used to any community based development project in the area.
This is why we have decided not to operate this trail. Sorry. Wether you'd decide to check other more responsible tourism option please write us: antoine@transhumancias.com

I understand Antoine's point, but on the other hand, the money from the "classic" inca trial is not being redistributed either

This sounds very good, could we leave on the 26th of may? Is this with a company or a private trip? Do we need to bring our own sleeping bags? would there be mules or do we carry our own bags? Who would be the guide?
