    Description:

    Part of the historic Inca highway system (Qhapaq Ñan), the Inca Trail to Machu Piccu is one of the most important South American trekking routes. Along the hike, you can see several gorges and streams that originate from glaciers. There are twelve archeological monuments along the trail, such as Qoriwachayrachina, Patallaqta, Runkuraqay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Intipunku, Intipata, and Wiñayhuayna. The starting point of the trip varies according to the trail you wish to take. The most popular route starts around kilometer marker 82 of the railroad Cusco – Machu Picchu (40 km / 25 miles from the citadel itself). Another possibility, shorter in time, is called the Sacred Trail, and begins at kilometer marker 104 of the railroad.

The trek starts in Km. 84 of the train tr*** from Ollantaytambo to MP. Acclimatize in the Sacred Valley prior to doing the trail. The agency can pick you up from the hotel in the SV. First day hike is 12 kms. Starting at km.82 cross the Vilcanota River and follow the trail a* it climbs up. Pa** a small village and the ruins of Huillca Raccay come into view high above the mouth of the river Cusichaca ('happy bridge'). Then descent down to the Cusichaca river.

Day Note:

Day 2 (11km): Climbing from Wayllabamba for about 4 hours through woods and spectacular terrain brings you to a meadow called Llulluchapampa (3,680m). It is another 2 hours climb to the highest pa** of the trail ( 'Dead Woman's Pa**) at 4,200m. The decent from the pa** is steep , following the trail on the left side to the valley floor and to the 2nd night's campsite at Pacamayo (3,600m). Toilet facilities are available.

Day Note:

Day 3 (16km):It takes about 1 hour to climb up to the ruins of Runkuracay and another 45 minute hike will bring you to the top of the second pa**, called Abra de Runkuracay (4,000m). You will now be walking along the trail of the Inca* with paving. Descent down the many steep steps from the pa**. After about 1 hour you will arrive at Sayacmarca by way of a stone stairca*e. Day 4 (6km): The trail from Wiñay Wayna to Machu Picchu takes about 1½ hours. You should try to get to the Sun Gate ( Inti Punku) before sunrise .
