El Dorado

• Sophisticated European design and the best desserts in Egypt make El Dorado my number-one spot for Italian food in town and one of my favorite places to eat in the country. The roof is grass, and the tables are rough wood, but the walls are sleek and made mostly of glass, and the lighting is discreet. The gnocchi is perfectly formed and served in a tomato-and-basil sauce. On my last visit, I peeked at a neighbor's steak, which was nicely rare and served with a neat pile of tasty-looking grilled vegetables. Save room for dessert, which includes tiramisu and a stunningly rich panna cotta with Irish cream sauce.
