User Review:
- kilwa,.was once the heart of a trading empire that stretched from West Africa to the far shores of the Indian Ocean,.Just 300 kilometres south of Dar es salaam,. Between 11th and 15 centuries ,Kilwa grew into a powerful trading town, until a Portugues invasion in 1505 brought about economic collapse,.It is fortunes revived briefly in the eighteen century but things were never the same again,The same was true of every part of Africa that was touched by Europeans ,but in Kilwa the arrival of the portugues was the end of a golden age,.Today the island has come full circle ,.it is now the same small, sleepy village that a visitor might have found over a thousands years ago,.it is palaces and mosques reducedto rubble, and inhabited by butterflies and flowers.
