Gaocheng Guanxing Tai

Description:

  • Located about 8km (5 miles) southeast of Dengfeng, this intriguing observatory is a welcome change for those who've had their fill of temples and pagodas. Built in 1276 by Guo Shoujing, a Yuan dynasty astronomer, this 10m-high (33-ft.) pyramidic brick structure is China's earliest surviving observatory. In Guo's time, a long stone beam from a runnel in the back wall was fitted with shadow markers and used to measure time and seasonal solstices.
