Detroit Institute of Arts

  • Type: Museums
  • NileGuide Expert tip:

The museum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and closes as early as 4 pm. Some personal photography is allowed under strict guidelines. Free guided tours are offered in the afternoon. DIA is open until 10 pm on Friday nights and offers child-friendly art workshops, storytelling, guided exhibit drawing and cultural performances. Can't find a parking space? The museum offers valet parking for a small fee. Plan to spend the day; a cafe and coffee shop serve light lunch items.

  • Description:

    • The Detroit Institute of Arts tends to surprise visitors with an unexpected collection that fairly compares to the art museums in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Over 100 galleries invite you to explore art from all over the globe. While the collection represents classical artists like Renoir, Van Gogh and Gauguin well, the emphasis of the DIA is world art. You will find displays from virtually every corner of the world, from ancient to modern. Regardless of your preference, a trip to DIA is not complete without a viewing of Diego Rivera's murals, which he considered to be his personal best.
