Sanctuary Cap Cana Golf & Spa

• The biggest news coming out of the Caribbean Basin is the development of Capa Cana, of which the Sanctuary, a government-rated five-star resort, is the first to open. Plans call for this luxurious compound, lying a 5-minute drive from the Punta Cana airport, to include condos and villas, as well as a casino, and three Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses, with several more hotels on the way. Bill and Hillary Clinton have already purchased property here.

  The entire community, amazingly, will comprise an area the size of Manhattan, opening onto 4.8km (3 miles) of beachfront. The Sanctuary is constructed in a Spanish colonial style, with luxurious and beautifully furnished suites. The spa is among the best in the D.R., and the adjoining marina is the largest in the Caribbean. From here you can go out on a fishing vessel to some of the best fishing spots in the world. Private residences feature one, two, or three bedrooms, with large outdoor sitting areas. The resort is set on a bluff overlooking the ocean and miles of pristine white sandy beaches.
