Description:
The Gold Souk is amazing for its sheer size and diversity. Dubai is the world's largest re-exporter of gold, and its famous Gold Souk features just about every jewelry design you can fathom -- including rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and gold ingots. Winding through a maze of paths, wall-to-wall shops sell yellow and white gold, silver, pearls, and other gems. Bargaining is expected: Although the price of gold is set (based on weight) according to the daily international rate -- and no more or less expensive here than anywhere else in Dubai -- there is leverage in price over the quality of the design and craftsmanship of each particular piece of jewelry. Because of the heat and fact that many shops close between 1 and 4pm, it's best to avoid visiting the Gold Souk in the middle of the day. The most fun -- although also most crowded -- time to visit is at night, when it's cooler out and the lighted shops sparkle with their gold and precious stones.
