NileGuide Expert tip:
Look closely into the eyes of the statues to feel the terrible sense of sadness
Description:
- This moving life-sized ensemble (1997) by Irish sculpture Rowan Gillespie is his tribute to the one million plus victims of the Great Potato Famine (1845-52) and its resulting mass emigration. It depicts a group of emaciated figures walking towards the quays in the hope of taking a ship to the New World. In 2007 a companion piece by Gillespie was unveiled in Ireland Park, Toronto Harbourfront.
