Description:
Built on the site of an early Danish chapel (1095), this 17th-century edifice has fine interior woodwork and an organ (dated 1724) on which Handel is said to have played his Messiah. A unique (and, let it be noted, macabre) feature of this church is the underground burial vault. Because of the dry atmosphere, bodies have lain for centuries without showing signs of decomposition. It is said that Bram Stoker was inspired to write Dracula in part by having visited the vaults as a child. Note: The church is wheelchair accessible, but the vaults are not.
