Coming to Ireland for a week next June, and desperately want to stay away from tourist traps. Any advice?
We will probably base in Dublin and travel out all over the south - looking to see the real Ireland

If you want to avoid the tourist traps in Ireland:
Stay away from the south. That's where the tourists go. Why? Because that's where Ireland's tourism industry is. Of course, the tourism industry didn't build our beautiful landscape. Go to the other end of the country. Head to Co. Donegal in the northwest. You can't get there by train (kind of tells you that it's more remote than the rest of the country), so take the bus.
The landscape there is the most breath-taking in the country. I'd advise renting out a car and escaping. As you drive the landscape can change dramatically, as often as every 15mins in some areas!
If you want to avoid the tourist traps in Dublin:
Don't go on average bus tour. Take a walking tour - Dublin city is small enough that it's much more suitable for walking tours than bus tours. I'd recommend getting a private guide to show you around, particularly if you want to avoid the tourist areas. You'd be surprised by how inexpensive they can be!

It depends what you mean by tourist traps? The Island of Ireland has many places that are way off the tourist map but then most people coming over here want to see the likes of Blarney Castle, Cliffs of Moher and Dingle etc. what are your interests and have you got a rough itinerary in mind?

There are loads of places that tourists go to visit but they're hardly traps for that, just places so popular that they end up having lots of visitors. When I have friends visit I take them to spots that I love but at times when I know the tours will probably not be there yet. June will be busy I'm afraid but maybe not so much as July/August when schools are off. Ireland and the Irish are fairly easygoing and meet like with like.Go where you like with an open heart and mind, don't be afraid to wander, take your time and enjoy a pint when fancy takes you. Tripadvisor is a great reference tool and if you need advice take some from a local and go with your gut instinct. Mind your money as you would in any major city and be safe no matter what meaning if you have to go a bit overboard do it close to where you're sleeping and make sure someone there knows when to expect you.
If I can recommend places I'd say Glendalough in the morning to lunch, Dublin by opentop bus in the afternoon and get to Galway if you can. Booking.com for decent hotel prices compared using Tripadvisor. Enjoy!
