Come here if you're looking for Düsseldorf's most traditional and atmospheric restaurant. Zum Schiffchen, in the heart of the Altstadt, is the city's oldest restaurant. A golden model ship on top of the step-gabled building (which dates from 1628) reminds you of its location, near the river. The interior follows the tavern tradition of scrubbed wooden tables and rustic artifacts. Good, hefty portions of regional cuisine are the rule here. Menu items include such two-fisted German specialties as Wursts, sauerbraten, schnitzels, knuckle of pork with roast potatoes, and great emphasis on seasonal specialties like asparagus. The menu is large, and the service by the blue-aproned waiters (called Köbesse) is rather hectic. Zum Schiffchen is the perfect place to sample Frankenheim, Düsseldorf's local beer. Over the years, the restaurant has attracted a host of famous diners ranging from Napoleon and Heinrich Heine to Arthur Miller.

This restaurant is in the old town, and a taxi cannot take you to the front door due to pedestrian street - it possibly dumps you a block and a half away but with the given directions...

Tasty traditional German food but my stomach did not hold it well

Not sure what it was but although the sausages, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut were yummy I had to dash back to my hotel to the bathroom. Possibly it was either something in the food...
