Heinrich-Heine-Institut

Description:

  • Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was Germany's greatest lyric poet. More than 10,000 volumes, as well as the manuscript bequest of this Düsseldorf-born poet, are found here. Born into a Jewish family, Heine nominally converted to Christianity so that he could attend law school. He was the author of the famous Die Lorelei, and his poems were set to music by Schubert, Schumann, and Hugo Wolf. His work was prohibited during the Nazi era, during which Die Lorelei was officially attributed to an unknown author. In the Altstadt, you visit the house where Heine was born. It's at Bolkerstrasse 53 and is marked by a plaque.
