Kiefernstraße

Description:

  • During the mid-eighties, the Kiefernstraße was the centre of uprising and rebellion by the Düsseldorf population, since supporters or even members of the terrorist group Rote Armee Faktion remained in hiding here. Thus, they were Düsseldorf's answer to the Hamburg Hafenstraße riots. The houses erected in 1910 were originally flats for employees of the iron industry. But when the Klöckner works were closed in 1975,  the ownership of the flats was given to the state who wanted to give the tenants notice so that they could pull down the buildings. As a result of this, the first houses were occupied in 1981 and after several years worth of wrangles and mostly unsuccessful raids, the occupants obtained proper tenancy agreements.
