Neander Church (Neanderkirche)

Description:

  • On Bolkerstrasse, in the midst of all the late-night bars, restaurants and excess of the Old Town, you will find an oasis of solace in the form of Neanderkirche. Located in a courtyard away from the main thoroughfare, this early baroque construction was named after the theologian, composer and teacher, Joachim Neander, in 1916. Built in 1684, Neanderkirche is officially the oldest protestant church in Düsseldorf. Although the members of the reformed church at that time were allowed to practice their religion, they were not widely accepted. As a result, new churches were only permitted to be built in a yard or an area that was not visible from the street. Today however, Neanderkirche's simple façade can be viewed from Bolkerstrasse. -Shannon McKenna
