  • This grand 19th-century hotel is in the midst of a multi-year renovation, estimated to cost $77 million. Among the changes, 21 smaller hotel rooms will be converted into 13 luxury suites, some with private gardens and outdoor showers. Parts of the hotel will remain open during the renovation. The shingle-style complex started out as two Gilded Age waterfront hotels, later joined by a 300-foot veranda that overlooks Edgartown Harbor and the lighthouse. Behind the hotel, there's a large pool. A new spa and fitness center opened this year. The hotel is just far enough from "downtown" Edgartown to avoid the traffic, but close enough for a pleasant walk past regal captain's houses. Water Street serves three meals in an elegant setting, and Henry's is a cozy barroom.
