Can't go on safari or board a submarine? Do the next best thing, and experience the exotic creatures of faraway at Edinburgh's zoo, aquarium and outdoor centres/museums.
Edinburgh Zoo has lots to offer, with scheduled activities such as petting and feeding and everyone's favourite highlight, the Penguin Parade. Visit Rainbow Landings to meet and feed the rainbow lorikeets and see Budongo Trail where they can get up close and personal with chimpanzees. Serengeti animals live on the sprawling land at the peak of Edinburgh Zoo. There are Sun bears, Indian one-horned rhinos, Sumatran tigers, Amur leopards, the UK's only koalas and European wolves.
At Butterfly and Insect World, walk amongst hundreds of gorgeous, exotic butterflies while they flutter around you. Don't miss the stick ant parade or glowing lizard display.
Handle falcons, hawks, owls and eagles and watch aerial displays at Falconry Scotland.
Hold your breath as you walk through a transparent tunnel surrounded by Sand Tigers and other fearsome sea creatures at Deep Sea World. With the UK's longest underwater viewing tunnel, a great cafe and gift shop, plus free parking, Deep Sea World is the perfect day out for all the family! Dive with sharks (you can take courses), and view the deadly under-water species on display.
Gorgie City Farm is a child-friendly working farm on a 1 hectare site with little fields and stables, styes and poultry- and sheep-houses. They have a horse, cow, goats, sheep, pigs, hens, turkeys and ducks, also an owl and a pussy cat! Public small animal handling sessions are usually available at the Pet Lodge, Fridays and Saturdays, 2-3pm. Public pony rides will be offered where availability of trained personnel allows; mainly during school holidays, or by arrangement. In the 'Pet Lodge' building you'll see Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Aviary Birds, rare breed Chickens, a snake, chinchillas, fish and tortoises!
