Festival week in Edinburgh

Description:

Edinburgh is at its most vibrant during the Fringe Festival in August. The streets are a maze of visitors who have come to see performers in all sorts of locations from traditional theatres and open-air stages to more intimate settings in the back of pubs and clubs. Be sure to book yourself into your hostel in advance and check out the listings in the widely available free magazine. The Stand Comedy Club, Traverse Theatre, Bedlam Theatre and the Edinburgh Festival Theatre guarantee some famous Scottish faces, but remember to take part in some of the traditional fun including the Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour, whose usually frequent queues may have shortened during this time.

Day 1 - Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh

Unload your bags at the hostel and immediately head out through the crowds onto the Royal Mile. Here you will be in the thick of the festivities with street theatre performed for free as well as comedians, magicians and musicians hocking their shows. Head to The Stand Comedy Club box office to secure your tickets for an evening performance, then elbow your way through to a seat in the Antiquary, for some live music, food and a refuge for the afternoon.

Day 2 - Edinburgh

Today take advantage of the dwindling queues for the usually popular tourist attractions. The Edinburgh Dungeon tour should be timed perhaps in the evening or between meals for those with a weaker stomach. The Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour is a great way to see the best taverns the city has to offer with a bit of culture thrown in. The guides are an enthusiastic and well versed lot whose humour makes them good drinking company.
