One of the cities greatest attractions is that it can appeal to all ages, tastes and persuasions. Three days in the capital with a group of students will undoubtedly be packed full of activites for both the day and long into the dark hours. First pick your hostel and Castle Rock is centrally located providing a buzzing and friendly environment. The hostel staff always offering great ideas for things to see and do and sometimes its difficult no to leave the hostel itself; with a great mix of foreign and local travelers you will more than likely gather a larger group together for a wild night out.

Day Note:

Arrive at Skirmish Paintball just after midday to ensure you run off that pub lunch and get the adrenaline throbbing through your head. Skirmish is also a great place to meet other people with team events and prizes for tournaments on occassion. Set aside a full afternoon to travel here and back into the city centre. Café Graffiti is a great venue for live music get here early for a good seat and enjoy a some bar snacks.

    Before we get confused, let's get one thing straight - the word café is a complete misnomer. Café Graffiti is in fact an arts and live music venue. Theatre makes the odd appearance whilst world music is a frequent feature. Hogmanay and Christmas see special events and a regular Ceilidh slot. Club nights include Big Beat (one Sa every month), Lizard Lounge (the other three Sa) and Midnight Blue (F).

    If you don't have the time to head north to the craggy outcrops of the Highlands but fancy a bit of urban rock climbing instead, this is the place to check out. With various difficulties of ascent and descent, and 150 routes to choose from, you'll be sure to find a section to fit your needs and aspirations. Be warned, it is not that easy first time round - new faces need to prove their abilities before they're allowed to tackle the big wall. There is an excellent beginner's course and kids' courses are also available. Essential pieces of kit are for hire, and discount and membership options are up for grabs.

    Description:

    Check out this venue if you appreciate the hidden talents of more obscure bands. Squeeze into the tight space and slam and mosh to the sounds. Other than hosting some mediocre acts, this is also one of the places to hear some of the area's most exciting new musical efforts. Be prepared for a loud, sticky and dark evening.

    Description:

    This club, apparently named after Bette Midler's character in Beaches, is one of Edinburgh's long-running and enduringly popular gay night spots. Given that there is no cover charge, the place is usually packed. The dancing is to a wide range of music. Open Monday to Sunday from 10:30pm to 3am. Next door, the glitzy Habana, 22 Greenside Place (tel. 0131/556-4349), is a bar that draws a mixed gay crowd daily from noon to 1am.
