    Rush is a real student hang out, with various evenings set aside for university societies and pre-club nights. This was the former Dr Watt's Library until they gave it a modern refurbishment - the bookshelves have gone but the party vibe remains. There's lots of cheap deals on simple food like burgers and baguettes and the occasional special drinks promotion. To kick-start your evening with an experimental tipple, try the colourful test-tube shooters.

    This is a monthly deal held at La Belle Angele in the Cowgate, featuring beats, hip hop, electro and funk, with the weird things going on including graffiti artists, breakdancers and Dreamcast pods.

    The Berlin Bierhaus's music policy concentrates on garage, house, soul, funk, drum and bass, as well as hip hop. On Thursdays, the Block Party crew spin some hip hop with drum and bass in two packed rooms. Fridays are dedicated to monthly club residencies, including Frisco Disco (soulful and funky west coast house) and Shift (hard house and trance). Added to the plethora of regular nights, there are one-off events - check local listings and the venue for upcoming events.

    This monthly Thursday night club provides techno, electro and drum & bass on the main floor from Mr Meltdown and Covalent, with special live guest Transgenic (Pillbox). In the back, things are a bit mellower with Sanskrit and Mikey Magic. Check out their website.

    Description:

    This studenty bar is situated at the base of Blair Street in the depths of the Cowgate. It is a sprawling space, full of sofas, benches and large tables for the punters to lounge around on. There is an adequate choice of beers on draught and a good selection of bottled beverages. Try the very cheap light snacks and meals which include that new pub favourite, cheesy nachos with dips. Towards the end of the week, the place hots up with the appearance of DJs playing a mix of house, funk, soul and hip-hop tunes.

    Trendy Wendy is infamous in Edinburgh for her Tackno parties downstairs at Joy and her many guest sets. She has to be the hardest working DJ in Edinburgh. At The Wendy House, she promises lounge, basement beats, loft classics, garage grooves and quality house. That and a variety of quality guest DJs.

    Before we get confused, let's get one thing straight - the word café is a complete misnomer. Café Graffiti is in fact an arts and live music venue. Theatre makes the odd appearance whilst world music is a frequent feature. Hogmanay and Christmas see special events and a regular Ceilidh slot. Club nights include Big Beat (one Sa every month), Lizard Lounge (the other three Sa) and Midnight Blue (F).

    Bar Kohl was established in 1993 and claims to have been the Isle's first vodka bar. There are about 250 varieties of vodka to sample, including no less than 54 Finlandias flavours, including Strawberries and Cream, Cherry Pie and Highland Toffee. For those wanting to mix their tipples, there is a wide range of nips and a good selection of bottled beers. The decor is a minimalist mixture of wooden floorboards, long tables, church pews, steel chandeliers and the ubiquitous star logo.

    Check out this venue if you appreciate the hidden talents of more obscure bands. Squeeze into the tight space and slam and mosh to the sounds. Other than hosting some mediocre acts, this is also one of the places to hear some of the area's most exciting new musical efforts. Be prepared for a loud, sticky and dark evening.
