Description:
Not so long ago, it was called the Edmonton Art Gallery, and it used to occupy a stately building in the heart of downtown, east of City Hall. These days, it's in a temporary space in the base of a downtown office tower while its brand-new, C$88-million, 30,000-square-foot home is being built, with an opening targeted for late 2009. It's a fitting expansion for a public gallery rightly placed among the most innovative and daring contemporary art institutions in the country. It is a champion of First Nations contemporary art (think artists like Jane Ash Poitras and Carl Beam) and has been an incubator for curating talent that has gone on to larger institutions all over the country and around the world. Even temporarily downscaled, it never fails to provoke and surprise.
