Duchess Bake Shop

• 124th Street is undergoing gentrification, and some of the streetscape can be downright gritty; step inside Duchess Bake Shop and transport yourself to another location—maybe even another era. This is an elegant shop with elegant baked goods. The gleaming white walls and painted furniture are as fresh as the pain au chocolate behind the bake counter. Tables for two line one side of the shop, and a larger table in front accommodates 4-6 people and affords a view of the rushing streetscape outside. Not that you'll notice anything else between bites of madeleine, pumpkin tulip cup, or éclair. Get a meringue and cappuccino to go and wander among the interesting shops that are popping up on this street, or take in an art film at the nearby theatre. - Judith Chrystal
