Fairbanks, like Alaska, is kind of an odd place. It's America, but at the same time, you wonder if the northerly latitudes have had an..."effect" forming the frontier attitudes of the place. Oil companies sponsor ice sculpting contests (Don't tell Louisiana!), there are corporate chains lining the streets, but they also have purely Alaskan things like an annual "Midnight Sun Baseball Game" in the summer. Of course, being so far north can mean a perpetual sunrise or sunset, so the sky is lit up for all nine innings in the summer. In the history of the event, they've never had to flip the switch on the stadium lamps. Throw in some Northern Lights, fun in the snow and frontier adventures, and Fairbanks will prove an eclectic experience.
