Eastside
The landmark of the east side of Flagstaff is Mt. Elden, a popular place to hike...uphill at an elevation of 2,834. Despite its rugged appearance, steep relief, this lava dome is easily accessible via an extensive, well-developed road and non-motorized trail system that is part of the Coconino National Forest. Farther east you will find gorgeous Lockett Meadows, formed from the remains of an ancient volcano. In addition, the east side boats several national parks. Elden Pueblo, an important and historical archeological site, offers public and educational digs. Another archeological site (this one for observation only) is the cultural crossroads of Wupatki National Monument. Sunset Crater's lava flows and cinders still appear fresh and rugged. Closer to Winslow, Meteor Crater is the most well-known, well-preserved meteorite crater on earth.
The road to all of these sights, as well as large residential neighborhoods, starts on famous Route 66, along which there are many restaurants and lodges. Night action awaits at the Museum Club, Star-Lite Bowling Lanes and Horsemen Lodge.
