Red Mountain

Address:

Mile post 247
Red Mountain Geologic Area
Flagstaff, AZ 86001

Description:

Red Mountain Trail and walk in to the eerie landscape formed by a volcanic cinder cone more than 740,000 years ago. The smooth yellowish-red rock, which juts asymmetrically into the air, looks nothing like the rock in the area, which gives this place an unsettling feeling. The trail is a very easy, pleasant 30-minute walk through lower elevation vegetation such as pinion and juniper trees, as well as the familiar ponderosa pine. Visitors should be aware that at the end of the trail, there is a ladder that must be climbed to gain access into the yellow rock area. It is sturdy and short, but may be inaccessible to small children or the elderly. Head north on 180 for about 25 miles. At mile post 247, look for access to a road on the left marked "Red Mountain Geologic Area." This is also a fun place to play in the snow during the winter.
