Snowbowl/Kachina wilderness

Description:

  • The Kachina Wilderness is named for the Pueblo belief that Kachinas, guardian spirits, rise from the peaks to visit the Pueblo tribes (Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, Laguna, and Taos are the best known) during special times in the year. While this name respects Pueblo history and beliefs, the Snowbowl remains incredibly controverisal; as significant as interpellation is, naming can only do so much. Since the Snowbowl was built as a local and tourist attraction for recreation, and since its proceeds go to owners located mostly in New Jersey and New York, it is considered blatant exploitation by some.
