Hiking for the fit and daring

Hiking for the fit and daring

Description:

Bring your boots and plenty of water bottles for this trip. Also, there are fantastic camping sites not mentioned in this itinerary, so if you choose to camp rather than stay in one of Flagstaff's hotels, bring warm camping gear as well. Even in the summer, nights in Flagstaff can get as low as 30 degrees.

    Description:

Flagstaff has a long history as a railroad town and major resting point for travelers out west. You'll definitely want to spend some time poking around the historic downtown, where stately, turn of-the-century buildings still stand guard over this busy high desert city. Highlights include the Tudor-inspired Santa Fe Railroad station (which houses the Visitor Center, where you'll want to stop and pick up a map), the1888 Babbitt Brothers Trading Company building, the Hotel Monte Vista, and Hotel Weatherford. Remnants of Depression-era roadside Americana can still be found on Route 66, which bisects downtown, including hotels, auto shops, and the Museum Club, a historic road house that continues to welcome road-weary travelers.

    Description:

Southwestern cowboy novelist Zane Grey fronted the funding in the early 1920's for the "Monte V," as it is called. Built in the heart of downtown Flagstaff, The Hotel Monte Vista, as well as the Hotel Weatherford (located a block away), are memorable for their ghost stories. In the famous Monte Vista Lounge, glasses and barstools have been known to move on their own and guests have reported many instances of "being watched." The Cocktail Lounge, perhaps most famous for its days as a successful speakeasy, is a great stop for visitors seeking live music on the weekend. This Flagstaff Landmark is located a block east of San Francisco Street on Aspen.

The Flagstaff Brewing Company, or "Flag Brew" as its affectionately called by locals, opened its doors in July 1994 and since then has become a downtown Flagstaff institution. Owners and co-founders Jeff Thorsett and Al Henes sought to create a casual pub atmosphere where everyone from hardcore beer lovers to outdoor enthusiasts could come together and enjoy a drink in a lively, friendly pub atmosphere. Our Local Expert Says:

From this trail, you can reach the best bouldering in Flagstaff. Even if you're not a technical climber, you can find places to climb--it's like a natural playground!

    Description:

Oldham Trail begins in Buffalo Park, Flagstaff's urban forest park, and climbs gradually up the south slope of Mt. Elden, an extinct volcano. The trail gets its name from Oldham Park, an open area near Elden's summit. From that high perspective you'll get a bird's eye view of Flagstaff and the surrounding area including mountains, deserts, and canyons as much as a hundred miles away. Some prominent features that are easily visible are Oak Creek Canyon, Sunset Crater, and the Painted Desert.

Along the lower reaches of the trail, you'll encounter boulder fields and cliffs where there are hidden crevices to explore and rocky nooks that make great places to picnic. As you climb higher, the trail takes you from a ponderosa pine forest into groves of aspen and mixed conifer stands of spruce, fir and pine.

In Oldham Park you'll see evidence of a catastrophic burn that occurred in 1977. Although the area affected by this huge wildfire still looks barren from Flagstaff, up close you can see how nature is healing from this man-made disaster.

Near Elden Summit, Oldham Trail joins the Sunset Trail which leads north across the top of Elden to Schultz Pass and south to the Elden Lookout Trail and...

On a clear night in the winter, stargazing through this magnificent telescope with make your jaw drop. Part way up Mars hill, look for a small vista on the right where all of Flagstaff can be seen below.

    Description:

Lowell Observatory, located atop Mars Hill Road just outside of downtown Flagstaff, is one of the leading astronomical research facilities in the United States, and one of the city's true must-see attractions. The observatory offers a compelling glimpse to universe--even bored teenagers will be amazed by what they see on the other side of the telescope. Day visitors are treated to guided tours, multimedia exhibits, and a viewing of the Sun with a specially equipped telescope. But the real action starts at dusk, when (weather permitting) the staff opens up the telescopes for viewings of Jupiter, the Moon, star clusters, and other incredible celestial sights. Rain or shine, visitors are also invited to experience the Observatory's interactive presentations at their portable planetarium, and tours of the Universe inside the 3-D movie theatre. If you happen to be looking for a great place to take a date, the Observatory, which is surrounded by walking trails and great views of the dark skies over Flagstaff, is surprisingly romantic.

Sublime views and access to Shultz pass trail and the Peaks

    Description:

The San Francisco Peaks are actually the remains of an extinct volcano. Millions of years ago this great mountain was shattered by an explosion similar to the one that devastated Oregon's Mt. Saint Helens in 1980. Inside the now quiet caldera a lush alpine environment has blurred evidence of that cataclysmic event.

The trail into the heart of the ancient volcano begins in beautiful Lockett Meadow. From this island of emerald ringed with aspens and high peaks it follows a primitive road into the mountain's now quiet Inner Basin and then connects to the Weatherford trail. Here, extensive stands of aspens cover the steep slopes of the old caldera coloring them solid gold in early fall. In spring and summer, wildflowers add a sprinkling of blue, red and yellow. From the basin's rims, avalanche tracks streak down the talus slopes and remnants of old lava flows bear witness to the mountain's cataclysmic heritage.

Snow may remain here even into summer. Cross-country skiers continue to ski as late as June in some years. Hiking is the most popular way of visiting this beautiful and unique environment; however, and hikers begin coming to the basin before the snows have completely melted from...

Exhilarating 18 mile, downhill bike ride to Wupatki. Need to have shuttle system unless you also want to climb up. Or, take the short Lava Flow trail and pay attention, not only to the immediate landscape, but the surrounding area. Try to imagine what it was like when this baby exploded, snuffing out every living thing within a 5-mile radius.

    Description:

Between 1040 and 1100, this volcano exploded, powerfully affecting the lives of local peoples and forever altering the landscape of the surrounding area. Today you can drive right up to the site, where shinny black molten rock covers this area, as if it erupted just yesterday. Take the Lava Flow trail to see the life slowly returning to this rugged landscape. The fee is $5. Take U.S 89 north for 12 miles, turn right on the Sunset Crater/Wupatki Loop road and continue 2 miles (3km) to the visitor center. This loop road makes it convenient to see the nearby Wupatki Ruins on the same day.

Lovers of Indian food cuisine will enjoy experimenting across the expansive and tantalizing menu.

From its base, the southeastern slope of Mount Elden looks like corduroy cast in stone. This trail leads you up that staircase of petrified lava to the mountain's summit 2,300 feet above Flagstaff. The route starts as a gradual climb along the shorter and less steep Fatmans Loop but increases in gradient as the Lookout Trail strikes out on its own ascent to the mountain top. Description:

For two decades, Mamma Luisa has been treating Flagstaff diners to outstanding Italian cuisine including homemade breads, sliced-to-order veal dishes, pastas and chicken. Lunch and dinner are served daily. The menu is large, and so is the flavor, though the restaurant itself is quite diminutive. Though it may get a bit cozy when it's crowded, the place is filled with country charm and a charming service staff that will make you feel welcome. A children's menu is available. Full bar service is available.
