Description:
This place serves a lot of the food-market workers from across the way, as well as so many foreigners with particular eating schedules that the owners have started serving meals all day long, 7 days a week -- a true rarity in Florence. Ask to sit downstairs in the brick barrel vault of the old cantina if you want some privacy; if you want company (they make even the small wooden tables communal), sit upstairs, where you can gaze at the dozens of photos of the restaurant's more (but mostly less) famous patrons. Securing outdoor seating, which spills over with customers, will require some patience at lunchtime. The antipasto caldo alla Zà-Zà has a bit of everything. If you don't want ravioli strascicati (in creamy ragù), brace yourself for a tris di minestre (three soups: ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, and fagioli con farro). Bocconcini di vitella alla casalinga con fagioli all'uccelletto (veal nuggets with tomato-stewed beans) makes an excellent second course.
