When the Medici were exiled from the city in 1496, what happened to the Palazzo? Was it just abandoned until they returned in 1512?

In 1494 the Palazzo was sacked by the Florentines and the art treasure was confiscated in the name of the Florentine Republic and I believe the building remained unoccupied until the Medici returned in 1512.
