Often in the running for having the best beaches in Brazil (and the competition is stiff), Florianopolis caters to those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the country's urban centers, but who also aren't afraid of spending a little money on doing, eating, and living the best. And the island's hotels are no exception: the best... at a price.
The best, in Brazil, often means a "pousada" a traditional inn, or B&B, that should be at once homey and accommodating. As such, many of the hotels we've chosen for this list are pousadas. Unless you're staying in the busy center of the city, you'll enjoy your pousada's subtle charm, proximity to the beach or nightlife, and dining.
The North is the island's main tourist drag, with brand-name hotels, historic sites, and a little bit of everything to please any tropical vacationer. Ingleses Praia Hotel fits the bill with its deluxe rooms and beach-side pool.
The East, a hot-spot for surfers and other extreme athletes, hosts some of the island's most beautiful and pristine beaches. That's why we recommend Pousada Hi Adventure -- a quirky spot for people seeking a particular "vibe" -- for anybody wishing to stay near Praia da Joaquina.
The South is the island's most remote region, and it's here that you'll find it's best preserved ecological wonders and most out-of-the-way beaches. Situated near quiet, unassuming Praia do Campeche, Pousada Vila Tamarindo is an appropriately low-key place to snatch your little view of the ocean.
Business travelers will most likely stay in the Centro (downtown) region, where Florianopolis really does mean business. That's not to say that there's nothing to see here: historical monuments like the Hercilio Luz Bridge and cultural attractions are sure to keep you busy between meetings. The beach may be far away, but the Hotel Sofitel, with its pool, spa, and sauna, is an ideal spot for some "rushed relaxation."
