NileGuide Expert tip:
Don't let the plethora of surfers scare you away: a mixed crowd is generally welcomed here
The bad boy, Bond girl beach of the island, hands down, Praia Joaquina defines Florianopolis's eastern shore. In the 1970s, the beach was discovered by surfers and has become a destination in its own right for beach bums around the world. Joaquina hosts annual surfing championships as well as serving as an excellent kite surfing venue. The rocks found on the left side of the beach jut into the ocean, providing a unique vantage point, and the dunes found just behind the beach are the largest in the south of Brazil. You can rent your own dune surfing board on-site and try your luck on the sand, if the waves don't entice you.
