  • So what brought you to Florida Keys in the first place? And what else? We've pulled together some of the most interesting and nature-friendly attractions throughout the conservation-minded island chain that no visitor to Florida Keys should miss. Plus, they make for some great photo ops. Your friends back home might get jealous.

Just over two miles west of Marathon, nestled beneath what is now called the Old Seven Mile Bridge, lies the historical treasure known as Pigeon Key. In the early 1900s, the five-acre island served as a base camp for workers during construction of the original Seven Mile Bridge, the awe-inspiring centerpiece of Henry Flagler's Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad.

Swimmers, snorkelers, beachgoers and bicyclists freely enjoy the abundant natural resources of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, yet the history of this internationally known gem began with a handful of activists who wanted to preserve the coral reef. It soon became the United States' first undersea park. In 1965, one of the park's most popular underwater attractions was placed: an 8.6-foot-tall, 4,000-pound bronze statue called the Christ of the Abyss, and today is one of the most iconic symbols of the Florida Keys.
