The islands of the Florida Keys are all about the water, great outdoors, nature and wildlife. When it's time to let the kids run loose, it's time for Florida Keys's family-friendly attractions. These attractions are truly fun for the whole family. You might just reconnect with your own inner child - or at least Florida Keys's spirit of youth.
Not only can kids cruise the coral reefs on SNUBA, or interact with sea turtles, parrots, pelicans, dolphins or sea lions in the Keys, but one special place that won a place in our hearts and on the top ten list is the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Animal Farm, situated at the county's detention center just outside Key West.
Strange combination you say? Nearly 300 domestic and exotic animals either abandoned, confiscated or donated have found refuge at the farm, including a tiny key deer named Tina, who at about 10 weeks old was accidentally struck by a car on Big Pine Key. At the farm, the animals are cared for and loved by a contingent of the detention center's trustees who are screened and classified as being "safe" to work outside the detention center and interact with the public. The Sheriff's Animal Farm is open to the public without charge, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of every month. Holidays such as Easter and Christmas allow for special occasions at the farm, perfect for a family to drop in and pet a furry friend.
