Description:

  • This tiny house on the banks of Carroll Creek was reconstructed from the original materials of Barbara Fritchie's house after it was torn down; it's furnished with her own possessions. The house recalls the feisty heroine of John Greenleaf Whittier's poem of the same name, who is remembered for waving a flag and saying "Shoot if you must this old gray head, but spare your country's flag." Some say the story isn't true, but staff here can offer written proof that although Fritchie may have been 95, she did indeed confront the Confederates and refuse an order to lower her flag. Visit the house and decide for yourself.
