Alcock and Brown Landing Site

Description:

  • History was made on this spot on 15 June 1919, when pilot John Alcock and navigator Arthur Brown flew from Newfoundland to Ireland in just over 6 hours. They crossed the ocean at a speed of approximately 120 mph in a Vickers Vimy plane, which is small and fragile by today's standards. A monument commemorating their arrival stands at Derrygimlagh Bog near Clifden. Walk along the path to the original landing site and savor the moment.
