Description:
This lovely national park spreads over 2,000 hectares (4,940 acres) of mountains, bogs, and grasslands. There's an excellent visitor center just south of the crossroads in Letterfrack, which can give you tips and general information on the park's landscape, population of wild things, and scenic walking trails. It's worth taking one of these up some of the Twelve Bens, or through the peaceful Gleann Mór (Big Glen), with its River Polladirk. The center also offers sustenance in the form of tea, sandwiches, and freshly baked goods. During July and August, Tuesday and Thursday are "nature days" for children; on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, there are guided walks for the whole family. Call the center for information on these and other special programs.
