Description:
- One of the most interesting events in County Galway, the annual Maam Cross October Fair gives a glimpse into the past. Sheep, cattle, donkeys and the area's most treasured resource, Connemara Ponies, are bargained over with enthusiasm. This fair is particularly noted for its pony sales, the breed is unique to this area, surviving on seaweed and salt-tolerant grasses. Breeders claim their exceptional qualities are lost after two generations if bred outside Connemara. The fair is full of action as wily traders and buyers frequently sealing deals with spit and a handshake. Traditional livestock fairs are becoming very rare in Ireland, but the Maam Cross October Fair remains extremely popular with the four roads, making the town crowded with stalls and the curious. Admission is free.
