Gamboa Rainforest Resort

• Sprawled along the shore of the Chagres River in Soberanía National Park, the Gamboa Rainforest Resort is an ideal destination for families with kids, given the resort's jungle boat cruises, aerial tram ride through the rainforest, and minizoo of reptile, butterfly, and marine species exhibits. Every amenity under the tropical sun is offered here, such as a full-service spa, guided tours, and several restaurants. Very spacious double rooms have garden or river views (with private balconies) and a pleasant yet anonymous chainlike decor; attractive suites have Indonesian furniture and large living areas. The bathrooms are elegant and spacious.

  The 1930s-era clapboard homes at the resort's entrance have one- and two-bedroom apartments with kitchenettes. The apartments are quite appealing in a historical sense, with their hardwood floors and wicker furniture, but they are the cheapest lodging options because they do not have a view and are a short walk or minivan transfer from the main hotel. Book one of the newly renovated units in no. 253, 255, 256, or 258.
