Description:
- The wooden stockade that Captain Francis Light had assembled upon disembarking in 1786 was rebuilt almost two decades later with convict labor into a major fort, much of which remains intact. Named after Charles Cornwallis, the Governor-General of India, in whose charge Penang was annexed, the fort was built to protect the island from French invasion. The bowels of the fort now contain a history gallery and a handicraft and souvenir shop. An open-air amphitheater frequently stages local music and dance performances.
