The story is that Napoleon's army were respnsible for the loss of the sphinx's nose, but this is just a story. The sphinx is carved out of sandstone and over the centuries it has been eroded by the weather, and as the nose was the most fragile part it got so wethered that it eventually fell off, but no one knows exactly when.
