Description:

The largest reference library in Europe (more than 1.2 million volumes), it was bequeathed to the city of Glasgow by tobacco tycoon Stephen Mitchell in 1877 (building finished in 1911). He is commemorated with a bust in the entrance hall to the library. It holds the largest collection of Robert Burns works. A bust of the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva, stands under the striking copper dome on the exterior. The famous Mitchell Theatre is part of the same complex.
